At the age of 30, Robin Odenkirchen has already built an impressive career at Van der Valk Systemen. What started as an internship as a Project Draftsman for Horti & Solar grew into a versatile role as a Research & Development Engineer. He has been part of the company for ten years, the last three in the R&D department, but what does his work look like? And what makes him still go to work with a smile every day? Robin shares his story.
Robin | Research & Development Engineer
Versatile role: no day is the same
In the R&D department, no day is the same, as everything revolves around progress. “We develop new products for customers in Horti, Solar and Building, but also improve existing systems,” Robin explains. His workday usually starts with a cup of coffee and reviewing ongoing projects. “Because several projects run simultaneously, my work is varied. Some are still in the concept phase, while others are almost complete.”
From creating 3D drawings to testing concepts, from meetings with suppliers to building demo setups, Robin’s range of tasks is broad. “The great thing is that you work with both your head and your hands,” he says. “That makes the work challenging and fun.”
From idea to final product
One project Robin is particularly proud of is the development of a carport called ValkTop. “At the time, we had limited knowledge on this subject, so we started with extensive preliminary research,” he says. “After many concepts, meetings and tests, the design was ready. In September 2025, the first project was set up in Groningen. Seeing the final product installed after two years of development is really amazing. I’m proud of that!”
Yet the work is never ‘finished’. The market keeps changing, which means there is always room for improvement. “We continuously keep developing,” Robin says. “For example, by adding extra functionalities based on feedback, but also by responding to market demands. That makes the work not only challenging but also relevant.”
Great work atmosphere and growth opportunities
According to Robin, the reason he still enjoys going to work every day is clear. “Here, you work on innovative projects that contribute to a more sustainable world. You do this in a team and at a company where collaboration and enjoyment are important. For me, that’s the perfect combination.”
His own career growth within the company also highlights the development opportunities Van der Valk Systemen offers. “Here, you get the space and trust to develop yourself and take meaningful steps. Altogether, this ensures that I have been enjoying my work for 10 years.”
