Screen systems have become an indispensable part of modern growing strategies. While they were initially mainly applied in Venlo greenhouses to optimise the greenhouse climate, they are increasingly finding their way into poly greenhouses as well. With ValkPoly+, Van der Valk Horti Systems is responding to this growing demand. This advanced screen system has been specifically developed for poly greenhouses. How did this innovation come about, and what makes the system stand out? R&D Manager Vincent Prins and Commercial Manager Rob Bekkering take you behind the scenes of ValkPoly+ and explain why it is the ideal solution for poly greenhouses.
Professionalization of the poly greenhouse market triples demand for ValkPoly+
“Poly greenhouses deserved a high-quality screen system”
The poly greenhouse market is evolving rapidly and is becoming increasingly professional. As a result, demand for innovative systems, including screen systems, is growing. Van der Valk Horti Systems recognised this development early on. “Within horticulture, we have long seen that screen systems make a significant contribution to optimising greenhouse climate conditions,” says Vincent. “However, for poly greenhouses, there was no supplier offering a fully engineered system, while the market potential was actually huge.”
For this reason, Van der Valk Horti Systems initiated market research into the opportunities within the poly greenhouse segment. “The idea behind it was simple,” Vincent continues. “We wanted to develop a high-quality screen system that stands out in both functionality and price. This enables growers in this segment to invest in a system that allows them to optimally control their greenhouse climate. Poly greenhouses deserved a high-quality screen system.”
From market insights to a high-performing screen system
“Based on our market research, we selected strategic focus countries and engaged with large growers, installers and greenhouse builders,” Vincent explains. “We needed to clearly understand their needs, requirements, and challenges to develop a solution that truly adds value.” The team also visited multiple poly greenhouses on-site. “We literally stepped into the greenhouse to assess what was already in place and where improvements could be made. We quickly identified opportunities for a high-quality screen system.”
These insights enabled Van der Valk Horti Systems to move forward with the development of a dedicated solution. A comprehensive list of requirements was created, forming the basis for further development. “The next step was to develop several concepts, which were validated both internally and externally,” Vincent continues. “By continuously aligning with customers, partners, and colleagues, we were able to move towards the optimal solution.”
ValkPoly+: technically and visually distinctive
ValkPoly+ stands out from other screen systems both technically and visually. Instead of using the standard 19 mm tube profile, Van der Valk Horti Systems deliberately chose a roll-formed screen profile. “This profile shape distributes forces optimally and in the right direction, meaning the material is used exactly where it is needed,” Vincent explains. The system also offers advantages in terms of light transmission. “Thanks to a more compact screen cloth package, ValkPoly+ allows more natural light to pass through compared to other systems,” Rob adds to this. “This contributes to a better growing climate and improved crop performance.”
“The system is also tailored to the smaller compartments typical of poly greenhouses,” Vincent continues. “By using a smaller drive shaft, the motor is subjected to less load, allowing multiple sections to be connected to a single motor. This results in a cost-efficient solution. We are the only company offering this combination of a roll-formed profile, a smaller drive shaft, and a fully integrated system.”
“In addition,” Rob says, “ValkPoly+ is designed for easy installation without drilling or welding, ensuring that the greenhouse structure remains intact. As local installation often involves untrained labour, this was an important requirement for us.”
Why growers are increasingly choosing screen systems in poly greenhouses
Demand for screen systems in poly greenhouses is growing rapidly. Climate change, rising energy prices, stricter quality requirements, and the ongoing professionalization of the poly greenhouse market all play a key role. At the same time, more and more growers are transitioning from open-field cultivation to protected cultivation to better control their greenhouse climate.
“Traditional solutions such as whitewash are static and limit the ability to actively control conditions,” Rob explains. “Screen systems provide flexibility and control. Last year, we supplied screen systems for 60 hectares of poly greenhouses. This year, that figure has tripled to 180 hectares. This clearly demonstrates the growing demand and shows that growers increasingly view screening as essential for achieving optimal growing conditions.”
